Our heat-resistant and compostable packages have been tested to withstand boiling water. Just add hot to boiling water directly into the heat-resistant and compostable bag. Wait 15-20 minutes, shake occasionally and it's ready to enjoy!
From our customers' feedback, we have heard a range! Depending on your appetite -- some people eat it over 2 meals, while others enjoy it in one sitting.
By servings standards, it is 2 servings. We planned it to be enough for one with extra to share!
Our meals have a tested shelf life of 2 years.
Generally, dehydrated meals do keep for much longer than that (between 3-5 years) but we can concretely say 2 years.
When out on the trail, we recommend consuming the rehydrated meal in one sitting. For those who are light eaters or looking for a snack, we suggest you rehydrate the meal portions at a time (you can reuse the bag) to maximize freshness!
We heat seal each bag to keep its freshness. We recommend you store your Off The Path Provisions meals at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and away from moisture until you're ready to take it on the trails.
Some of our meals contain soy. Please refer to the product page and allergen labelling on the back for specifics.
While we do not have the official gluten-free certification (we are working on it!), our meals do not contain gluten nor prepared in a facility with gluten.
Definitely, our meals can be rehydrated at high altitudes and at low temperatures!
Water boils at a lower temperature at high altitudes so it may take a little longer to rehydrate. For every 1,000 ft elevation above sea level, give it an extra minute.
Since water also evaporates faster at higher altitudes, you may need to add more water than the instructions indicate. Start with a tablespoon or two, and add more as necessary.
Your purchase goes towards quality-sourced ingredients, fair wages and funds our social mission. A portion of profits from every purchase goes towards funding our outdoor education and sustainability programs for youth. Thank you for being part of the solution!
We recommend 2 cups of hot to boiling water.

For a fun experiment, we’ve buried a Off The Path Provisions bag in our home composting system. Most of the bag has disappeared aside from the resealable zipper (which is a thicker material) - upwards of 400 days.
We recommend that you compost your bag in a home or backyard composting system. See our blog on how to set yours up! We suggest that you cut the bag into smaller pieces first to speed up the process.
If composting industrially, please check with your municipal waste facilities as many do not accept compostable bags.
Compared to traditional plastic or aluminum camping meal bags that can take ~1000 years to decompose, we would like to think of these bag as an eco-friendly alternative as they break down faster.
Nope! It is important that we leave no trace when we explore the outdoors. The bag composts between 400-450 days so remember to pack out what you pack in.
One cool idea: some customers use the bags to hold their food scraps like banana peels + apple cores during their trip. Then just compost in a backyard/home compost or certified industrial facility!
Yes, our labels are also made of a corn based material.
Yes. You can use it to rehydrate your homemade dehydrated meals, to store trail snacks or to pack out your food scraps.
If you're rehydrating your meals in portions or using it to rehydrate your homemade dehydrated meals, in our experience, the bag can be used up to 5-6 times with hot to boiling water before holes start forming on the bottom.
We would love to! Currently, we only offer our products zero-waste or BYOJ (bring your own jar) when we host workshops or in-person events. If you have ideas on how we can do this on a larger scale, we'd love to hear from you!
